I was just wondering if anyone could recommend some foreign literature that has been translated into English: favorite books, classics, etc.
Forget about Aeneid, Odyssey, The Lusiads, ... I guess everyone knows about those. I'm looking for some hidden gems.

I'm from Brazil and there are a few authors that are considered classics of the Brazilian literature but are quite unknown by foreigners. If you're interested, my favorites are Machado de Assis (who wrote books like Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas also translated as Epitaph of a Small Winner, and other classics like Dom Casmurro) , Clarice Lispector (author of Near to the Wild Heart, The Hour of the Star, The Chandelier) and also Carlos Drummond de Andrade (writing poetry books like The People's Rose and Clear Enigma). These authors have a lot more works on their bibliography and you should be able to find translations for most of their works.

A few I've really enjoyed:
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
The Weaver and Memory of Water by Emmi Itäranta

"Crime and Punishment" is a very well know Russian novel, but soooo good! Some people really like Don Quixote, but I personally couldn't get into it and finish it, but I might have been to young for it when I read it. Although, you might really enjoy it, I would give it a shot!

I think you should give Isabel Allende a shot, she is a very talented Chilean author. Her book "The House of the Spirits" is amazing.

If you feel like poetry give Khalil Gibran a try.

Chokher Bali by Rabindranath Tagore, an Indian author. Chokher Bali means an eyesore, a constant irritant to the eye. The book's English translation is called Binodini, named after its main female character. Binodini follows the story of a young widow, Binodini, and her complex emotions.

I will like to recommend a novel by Chinu Achebe " Things fall apart" . A very good read from Nigeria. I would also recommend another good read that I and my mother read, called "Efuru" by Flora Nwapa . Both are Nigerian author. Flora Nwapa happens to be the first African woman author to be published internationally.

The Agony and the Ecstasy /Irving Stone

Enemy of the World by Road Warrior. I don’t know what country it originated from, but it’s a good dark fantasy read.
