I recommend Papillon by henri charrière. It is based on a true story.

There is this book, it's not a novel. More like a biography. But it's really very interesting and well written. It's called The Lonliest man in the world by Eugene K. Bird.

Its about Rudolf Hess and his stay in Spandau prison as a the sole inmate for many years.

It's a really good book.

THE GREEN MILE by Stephen King

I read it last month for my 2021 PopSugar Reading Challenge prompt: a bestseller in the 90s
It's a non-horror book by King, and it's one of my best reads this year
just call me "jane" :tiphat:

This may be slightly off from what you're looking for, but I just read an amazing book called Infinite Country by Patricia Engel. It starts out in a prison in South America, where a young girl is being held for committing a crime. She escapes because she is supposed to go to the United States with the rest of her family. It does not give a complete overview of prison, but it does talk about it, as well as the hardships of fleeing a violent country. It was amazing and I highly recommend it!
