High Fantasy Recommendations

Post by shilpa khanom »

Hey, so I'm very much into my whimsical adventure/ immersive fantasy era and while booktok and booktube are lovely I seem to always see YA fantasy like Throne of Glass/ Court of Thorn and Roses etc being recommended. But having read books such as the Gentlemen Bastards series/ the name of the wind and the poppy war I feel like I'm looking for something that has incredible world building but doesn't lose humour and heart in its characters and their relationships. So my question is what are your high fantasy recs? :tiphat:

I am upvoting all of those.
Besides that, A Song of Ice and Fire is worth reading even if not finished. From Brandon Sanderson also Elantris and Warbreaker. And The Witcher.

Definitely check out "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. I read it for this site and loved it, definitely the best fiction book I've read on here and I think the fantasy fits what you are looking for. We've longed to see the roses, but never felt the thorns
And bought our pretty crowns, but never paid the price
Find me in the river, find me there
Find me on my knees with my soul laid bare

The first author that came to mind: Anne Bishop

She writes series with incredible world building and storylines that have meaningful layers. You very much get sucked in. The most well known series is “The black Jewels” but there’s two more I’d definitely recommend one includes the books “Sebastian” and “Belladonna”, the last but DEFINITELY not least (I’m currently ignoring the series because I need more books from it) is called “The Others” series.

Another series I’d recommend by a different author IS lighter, but how often do you actually get truly Fae novels that aren’t just high fae, but brownies, and caith sith, and everything fae you can think of all the way to Oberon, Titania, Maeve, Blind Michael, all their children, and how all the fae came from all the different pairings and such? It’s all in the October Daye series. October is kind of a detective type fae that tries to stay on the fringes of fae affairs as it’s all so sneaky and backstabby, but keeps getting sucked deeper and deeper due to circumstances, favors, and ultimately her own do-good nature. Personally I can’t put them down.
I do not think that word means what you think it means- Inigo Montoya, “The Princess Bride” :eusa-think:

All of these are great series' and definitely get you lost in their world building.
Another to add that I've reread over ten times is
The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.

They made a terrible TV series of it on Netflix at one time- so if u want to watch the concept of it first- definitely read the books after watching The Wizard's First Rule.
