My favorite is The Diary of a Young Girl (aka Anne Frank's diary). It is a great look into her thoughts and what it was like for her during World War II. I recommend it to everyone as I believe it is such an important read :)

Since you frame this as something to complete before death, it seems to me you would want to choose books that help prepare you to die well. Thus I would say you must read Plato and the Stoics (e.g. Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus). Plato was not a Stoic, but he had in common with them the idea that philosophy both was meant to ensure a life well-lived and a death approached without fear.
