What's a great fantasy book to read?

Post by mking0803 »

I've been looking for a great fantasy book to read for a while. I can't seen to find one that will jump out at me. I like anything with magic and magical/mythical creatures. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Have you tried Inkheart by Cornelia Funke? I haven't read that book in a while but from what I remember it always kept me on the edge of my seat and is packed with fantasy.

Can you specify precisely what type of fantasy - urban, epic, etc?
I'd recommend the Kate Daniels series - it has magic and covers a wide range of mythologies and creatures.

Thank you both! I will look into both. I've seen the movie for inkheart but never read the novel.

The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss are both excellent books!

The Outlander series is subtle but well worth it in my opinion!

If you are looking for some good mythical action, I highly recommend the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. Maybe you'd think it's a little childish but I don't think you'll regret it.

I've been tearing through the novels of Graham Joyce. Right now I'm reading Dreamside, which is about a group of lucid dreamers, and it's wonderful, but honestly everything I've read by him so far has been great. I guess he kind of nips at the urban fantasy genre. He's British.

I agree, you need to read the Outlander series. It is 8 books in the series and very detailed. IT took me a year to read it.

I really like this Science Fiction & Fantasy book I got for free. The Waiting Booth (Whispering Woods Book 1) by Brinda Berry. There are three books in the series and although I have only read the first one both the other two have good reviews. It's about dimensions and some romance. There is a bit of a mystery element to it as well.

Try the Night Circus for a Fantasy/Romance novel. The book gets a bit disturbing however. It is written by Erin Morgenstern.

Brandon Sanderson, hands down, is one of my favorite fantasy authors. I would suggest Elantris or the Mistborn Trilogy. Go to the forums and enter the Discuss Authors forum and search for Sanderson. There is a forum devoted specifically to him and there are many comments and discussions of his books. I posted mini-reviews of both the books mentioned above in that forum. There is also a thread on-going currently called "Outgrowing Fantasy" where there is a lot of discussion about fantasy books and authors.
