Stephen King's The Stand is scary. So is Cell. When I want to be scared I turn to Stephen King.

I think it's so difficult to find really scary horror books... People seem to love Stephen King and though I love some of the film adaptations, I could never get into his books. I really wanted to! But I just find his writing... boring. There, I've said it. I'm sorry, he seems like a great person and I do like the films, but the books... well it's just my opinion, and I mention it because he is such a popular author, the problem must be with me... If you do like his writing, though, you have A LOT of books to keep you busy for a while :)

After looking for horror recommendations myself, I tried reading Heart shaped Box by his son, Joe Hill. Also didn't love it, but other people seem to really enjoy his books. You could give them a try.

I think I will read "House of Leaves" next. It's by Mark Z. Danielewski and, apparently, it's terrifying.

My favorite horror books to date are Shirley Jackson's We have always lived in the castle and The haunting of Hill House.

Hope you find something here!

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King, Under the Dome by Stephen King, or anything by Sue Grafton!

John Saul has a great list of psychological triller and/or horror books. His name was even mentioned on a Japanese horror anime.

Although I have just read only two of his works, I can say that he sure gives the creeps.

I see a lot of Stephen King recommendations so I'll assume you have that covered and instead recommend Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill.

Hey! If you're looking for a nonfiction, Tokyo Vice by Jake Adelstein might fit what you're looking for. The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin is also pretty suspenseful. As for horror, I liked John Dies at the End by David Wong, and Parasite by Mira Grant.
