Hello all! I am looking for new books to read out loud. I am 7 months pregnant and have been reading everything out loud so that my daughter can hear while in the womb. I've read all of the books in my personal library and am looking for recommendations for great books to add to my library. It most definitely does not have to be geared toward children. I've been reading books of all genres and age levels. I appreciate any recommendations y'all have to offer.

I was actually going to suggest just that - not only reading books geared towards children. I did that during my pregnancy, but by the time my baby was here, I was quite at my wit's end from the same silly little stories over and over, so I started reading novels to him....Turns out he enjoys that more than the children stories anyway! I'm not sure of any particular recommendations, I've been reading random novels to him, but I just finished Anne of Green Gables to him. It was certainly an upbeat, fast spoken novel to read aloud so it may be interesting to a baby in the womb.

Try Winnie the Pooh, Curious George, Babar, Madeline, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz. Little Women...a good foundation of timeless children's literature that has a little more substance than true "baby" books. And think of the books you enjoyed as a child as well. Also, considering going to your local library and talking to a librarian in the children's department. They would probably have some good suggestions as well.

You really don't need to read War and Peace to her yet unless you truly want to. Just reading to her is enough.

I would definitely suggest novels with longer sentences, not children's books! The constant thrum of your voice is much more soothing than the start and stops of the shorter sentences in children's books. Perhaps poetry might be soothing as well? For mommy and baby!

I suggest poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends! My kids have always enjoyed Dr Seuss books as babies, and around toddler ages they loved watching my expressions as I would read chapter books to them. Now that they are in school, they love to read, but still ask for me to read novels to them.

This is great advice! I hadn’t considered growing tired of children’s books before baby even arrived.
