I'm not really into horror stories because I'm a scaredy cat and reading one terrifies me as I imagine it exaggerately. Hahaha! But hey, try to read Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. I believe its awesome!

I don't think anyone writes horror books better than Stephen King. However, if you like classics too, then Edgar Allen Poe gives King a run for his money.

Someone else mentioned Stephen King, I will second that. Some of his books I think are the most interesting are 11/23/63, Rose Madder, the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, The Shining, The Green Mile, Just After Sunset, Revival, and his short story collections.

Stephen King is the master, obviously, but there is a British writer called Adam Nevill who has written some of the scariest books I've ever read!

One of his called The Ritual was made into a film last year, but the one that terrified me most was probably No One Gets Out Alive. It starts slow but kept me awake at night by the end...

Stephen King's The long walk. It is like a mock of a marathon but in this if you stop or reduce speed you will be shot .

Stephen King (his short stories are possibly scarier than his novels), HP Lovecraft, Clive Barker, and Dean Koontz's earlier work are some of the scariest stories I've read.
