I am about to begin my first year of nursing school and have a love for learning about anything related to the medical field. I have been looking for medical books to read (preferably nonfiction), does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks? I haven't, but my aunt read it when she was in nursing school. She seemed really excited about it, so maybe it's something you would enjoy.

Hmm these might not be helpful but here's some books / studies / short stories I read in my literature&medicine class when I was in college - I pretty much only read a few books mostly excerpts:
(books)
- Atul Gawande's Complications (nonfiction)
Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (fiction but with film)
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (fiction)
David Feldshuh's Miss Evers' Boys(based on the Tuskegee experiment/ there's a film too)
(the rest are like short stories, many are from a book but I'm not sure which, you might able to find them online )
- Sunsan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor
Mike Oliver's The Invididual and Social Models of Disability & Face Blind (I believe this is in The Mind's Eye)
Rita Charon's To Rend the Lives of Patients (nonfiction)
Arthur Conan Doyle's A Medical Document (short story)
Johnson's Unspeakable Conversations
Orwell's How the Poor Die
William Carlos Williams's Mind and Body & The Practice
Rachel Aviv's God Knows Where I am (nonfiction short story)
Jane Macnaughton's Why medical humanities now in Medical Humanities
Anton Checkhov's A Doctor's Visit (short story)
Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies
Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper (short story)
Crichton's Medical Days & Now and Then
Gawande's When Doctors Make Mistakes & The Case of the Red Leg
Singer's Happy Nevertheless
Sacks's Anthrologoist on Mars & Face Blind
Terkel's Working

Maybe a bit disturbing, but just to get you in the mood...one of my favorite books Notes of a Country Doctor by Mikhail Bulgakov
