Deceitful Survival by LC Lee is a captivating story of Andrée. Andrée becomes a nun as a young woman after being abandoned by her family. During her first years as a practicing nun, she is sent to do work in Haiti where she meets René, the priest of the church in Haiti.

The story takes place in the early 1800’s, where conflict between the French and the Congolese was at an all-time high. The Catholic Church, under the French reign, did not allow the Congolese to engage in Vodou practices. Conflict erupts and Father René is captured by the indigenous Vodou tribe. With fellow friends of the church, Andrée sets out to rescue René. The story follows René and Andrée, and their tumultuous life after being captured by the Vodou tribe. They experience love, loss, friendship, shame, and somehow find the strength to continue when it seems there is nothing left to survive.

What I liked most about this book, is how fitting the title of Deceitful Survival is. In life, one has to do what they must to survive, and that is exactly what René and Andrée did. Despite what life had thrown at them, they found ways to triumph over their situation. They made the best of what they were given.

What I disliked most about this book, is that the plot became predictable, almost unrealistic. The storyline follows a common trend throughout. Something positive happens in the lives of René and Andrée and then immediately after, something terrible happens. This cycle persisted throughout the entirety of the book. While reading the book, one could tell that the true story was based in the hardships the characters experienced.

As well as being predictable, the ending was extremely anticlimactic. It ended very abruptly, and I was left unsettled. I had hoped for more not in terms of the storyline, but for a more conclusive ending. I almost didn’t believe that I was on the last page of the book and kept trying to scroll forward.

I would rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. Historical Fiction novels are a guilty pleasure, so I am trying not to be biased in my rating. I rate it at a 2 out of 4 stars because of the unrealistic, predictable storyline and the anticlimactic ending. The book also had minimal editing errors and appeared to be professionally edited. The book had some explicit content, but non-descriptive and mostly open to the imagination. I would recommend that this book be read by young adult audiences and older. I think that this book is fitting in the Historical Fiction genre, but also Romance. I’d say that if you enjoy a book about traveling/other cultures, love, and strength, then this is the book for you! Despite the downfalls of the book, I thought it was an incredibly engaging story and would still recommend it to others!
