The book Mirrored Worlds by Tayma Tameem is the first of a series of books set in a universe of magic and technological advancement. Thus, giving the story a wizardry meets secret agent feel, which would appeal to a young-adult to adult audience that enjoys the sci-fi and fantasy genres. The story sets off on the planet Reath, and centers around a special task team whose secret mission is to secure and retrieve a foreign and unidentified infant whose existence has seemingly initiated the potential destruction of Reath, which also happens to be the magic-less Earth’s mirrored world.

The rich yet trailing history, and the diverse layout of the lands are revealed simultaneously as the team plan their way, and traverse through the different terrains facing mysterious and monstrous creatures, and potential foes along the way. The mission is affected by the above-mentioned factors, as well as an underlying political instability, thus creating a volatile backdrop to increase the excitement and thrill of the adventure for the reader.

The character development with regards to personal growth and experience occurs mostly with the female lead Lila, who is forced to learn and adapt quickly in order to become a valuable member of the special task team. The male leads Battleaxe and Graute have the reader intrigued at their past lives and their current motivations, which may affect the secret mission. Witnessing the characters’ initial dispositions peel back throughout the mission leads the reader to grow a sense of attachment to the characters, if not an understanding of their actions and thought process. Tayma Tameem does a good job at maintaining the application of the characters’ skill-sets and use of intelligence throughout the story, with the exception of Lila, who initially fumbles about due to her new circumstances, and thus adds humor to a rather hair-raising adventure.

Mirrored World by Tayma Tameem receives a 3 out of 4-star rating. The story is written impressively well, and is easy to enjoy. There are, however, instances where the same typos recur enough to be noticeable. As well as a couple of instances where there are factual, and continuation errors. For example, dark matter does not absorb and reflect heat, but rather absorbs and retains heat. The characters were at some point mistaken either by name or gender. That being said, these typos or errors are not of such significance as to detract from the overall flow, readability, and enjoyment of the story.

Mirrored Worlds contains an exciting adventure and is well-paced to keep the reader in constant contemplation, whilst steadily learning more about the divided and tumultuous world the characters are navigating. There is a good transition between the character perspectives to add to the impact of the action scenes, the feeling of discovery, and the moments in between.
