When Sally Gallager went to check on her one-year-old son the night after his birthday party, she did not expect to find an empty bed. Vanished, book one of the Void series by Tayma Tameem follows the life of the Gallager’s. A young family with two kids; four-year-old Jess and AJ, who went missing under highly mysterious circumstances. Distraught, the family tries to find answers with the help of a high-ranking detective who thinks that every case is black and white but this time he might be wrong. Ryan desperately tries to keep his family together as their secrets are revealed while hiding the truth of the disappearance of their son from their daughter Jess. Will he be successful? Or will their secrets consume them all? Will AJ ever be found?

The novel clearly illustrates the psychological torture and grief that follows the loss of a child. The uncertainty of such a situation may break or make the relationships of those involved. It also shows that there is still hope for humanity as people from different parts of the country join in the search for AJ even though they do not have any relationship with the family.

I liked the simplicity of the book. The author used simple language that is easily understandable and the ideas are well presented. The plot of the book is captivating and it is really hard to put the book down once you start reading it. The character development is also top-notch, with every character having an adequate backstory that gives us an insight into who they are. Most of all, the level of suspense the book carried. The book is highly unpredictable and I loved it. I might have just found my new favourite author.

What I didn’t like was how one of the characters, Amy just fell of the grid. The author does not mention what happens to her after her last newspaper report blew up in her face. She just drives off in her car and is never heard from again. I would have appreciated it if the author told us a little more of what happened to her or maybe it was just part of the mystery.

I was thoroughly entertained by book and I give it a rating of 4 out of 4. The author presented her ideas concisely and clearly. She also used wholesome language that did not include any vulgar words. The book was exceptionally edited and lacked any grammatical or spelling errors. I would recommend it to anyone who likes well written books with a compelling storyline.
