[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a science fiction book authored by Matthew Tysz. It is the first installment of the We are Voulhire series and tells the adventurous story of a young man called Galen Bray as he journeys to the mighty kingdom of Voulhire to claim an inheritance his uncle left him. A wide part of the story takes place in the majestic cities of this vast and prosperous kingdom as the author brings to light the magic and mystery of the city.
Galen Bray, the protagonist, having arrived Voultire from the terrible war-torn Lands of the Princes, finds himself in the company of his estranged uncle's estate executor, Rowan, who he grows fund of and becomes friends with. As the story progresses and Galen continues to acclimatise to his new environment, his friendship with Rowan grows stronger and more characters are gradually introduced into the plot such as King Wilhelm Arcolo; the benevolent ruler of Voulhire, his second in command; the devious and lecherous chancellor, Midius Maido and Eldus Alderman, the new Lord of the city of Hillport, among many others. Most of the early chapters of the book basically introduce the plot and the characters.
The use of a map of the entire Voulhire realm at the beginning of the book was a stroke of genius as it gives the reader a visual connection to the geographical setting of the story. Although one might easily get confused by the many different points of views of the characters as the story builds, I really like how the plot unfolds gradually, introducing each character and allowing the reader to properly connect with the characters individually. Even more impressively, the author tried to make each character likeable and easy to connect with.
I did not notice any grammatical and typographical errors so I would say the book was professionally edited. Also, the book did not contain erotic references but had a little bit of profanity. It should be suitable for all religions because it does not slight or degrade any religion. On a general note, I find nothing to dislike about this book because it can only be described by the word "perfect" and therefore recommend it to readers of all ages who are interested in science fiction stories.
What I like most about this book is that being the first installment of the series, it places plenty of emphasis on introducing and connecting the reader to each of the major characters. I also love the complex nature of the plot's build up and how each chapter provides enough suspense to make the reader have interest in the next chapter. The author's brilliant imaginative description also deserves to be noted as it brings alot of life to the scenes. Because of the aforementioned reasons, I rate this book 4 out of 4.
