Jack Winnick writes Devil Among Us, the second book in his Lara and Uri series. This book tackles the topic of terrorists seeking to alienate America and Israel from each other. Lara and Uri are working for separate agencies but are assigned to work together. Their mission is to discover the identity of the terrorists that bombed a religious building and what they may be planning next. Throughout their mission, they experience kidnapping, fighting, and more.

What I liked the most about reading about Uri and Lara's mission is the way the plot slowly unfolds. Important events and characters are revealed bit by bit. The more one reads, the more one learns about the story. However, what I disliked the most would be the amount of characters. There were so many characters introduced over time that it was difficult to keep track of them. Chapter by chapter the third person viewpoint would change, often introducing new characters. This led to difficulty remembering which character was which.

This book would be enjoyable to those knowledgeable about politics, international affairs, and terrorism. This book also features romance, yet it is not the driving force of the book. I appreciated that the romance was not overplayed or forced, nor the focal point. It was a feature of the whole story. Those that would not enjoy this book are those that enjoy a simple, mindless read. The political information requires one to pay attention to what takes place every chapter.

Another feature of the book that some may not enjoy is the sexual content. It is hinted within the story that two characters willingly have sex together, but sexual scenes regarding the bad guys are coarse. There are descriptions of them raping an underage girl and sexually abusing an adult female. The adult female laughs off or ignores the abuse at times but is later described as feeling that the 'horror of events would never leave her.' This leads to a conflict on the effects of sexual abuse, which should not be undermined.

Overall, I would rate this book a 2 out of 4 stars. I gave it a rating of 2 instead of 1 because the writing style was mostly smooth. It made sense and did not jerk the reader around or lead to confusion. I gave it a 2 instead of a 3 also because of the writing style. While it did make sense, it could also be repetitious. There are many words that are overused throughout the book such as 'of course' or 'goons.' Had the author used different words or different sentence styles, it would have been more enjoyable.
