Review by Pippa Penelope -- Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren
Soul Seeker is a paranormal thriller fiction by Kaylin Mcfarren. The story is narrated by a snarky all-knowing narrator who leads the readers to the story's events backward. The novel is led by Captain Benjamin Poe, who struggled to redeem himself of the mystery which led him to kill his own son, Gabriel Poe. The book opens having Benjamin Poe in prison, telling his attorney of the history that would unravel the crime to the readers.
The first chapter of the book is such a promising introduction of who really Poe is. Personally, I like how he was helpless and hopeful at the same time. I like the author's style telling the readers in the very beginning that there is something wrong and giving the readers the responsibility whether to put their sympathy to Poe or condemn him of the crime he committed. Only that, after the present, Poe is re-introduced as a nobleman. A man who is dedicated to this work as a captain in the fire department. He's a man of conscience, and despite his conflicted relationship with his wife, he is doing his best to be the best person he can be to Gabriel and Lexie, his wife.
I like and enjoy reading the book. It is well-written, and the author wrote the words smoothly for the readers to read and be engaged with the mystery rather than comprehending the texts. The book is rich with suspense and tease of what would happen. As a reader, there would be times that I was calm reading, believing that all things had been solved only to find out on the next page that there was one or many to come that I would be excited about. Another thing that I like about this book is how conflicted Benjamin Poe's character is. I like how he understood and suspected his son and finally killed. I'll leave that to the future readers to find out.
I must agree that even though Crighton is the villain, he is as impressive as the main character. He possesses a lot of complexity. Crighton is like the Daredevil, only that he is a man of Lucifer. His character is strategically written to disturb Poe's claim that he did not murder his son. The back story of what happened has many more levels that intermingle the right kind of evil Crighton has. Perhaps Crighton's character is there to leave the readers what to believe, and the idealism of what you did wrong will always be inside your conscience, and there would be people or instances that would pay the damage.
I am rating this book as four out of four stars. The mystery and frustrations had me entertained more than enough. Paranormal, crime, mystery, and thriller fans would surely enjoy this book. This book would be hard and gory to read if readers had not read any paranormal and crime.
