Review by Jojobiz -- Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi
Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is a detective book featuring furry animals as the characters. Inca and her friends help Boss, a Rottweiler in the neighborhood, solve a case involving a missing will. Boss's friend Ned is set to inherit Mr. Finchley's mansion following his death. He suddenly finds himself in a tight spot when Cyril, Mr. Finchley's nephew, threatens to take the house away from him and even goes as far as giving him a time limit to move out. Boss approaches Inca and company to help locate the will that proves the house was left to Ned. The furry detectives are tasked with the responsibility of saving Ned and exposing Cyril for the selfish person that he is.
The book has beautiful monochromatic illustrations done by Jorje Valle. I thought they complemented the book perfectly. The lack of color makes the reader concentrate more on the story while still being offered a visual progression of the plot.
That said, there were several things I disliked in the book. First was the confusing plot line. I thought the story would be about finding the missing Raoul, considering all the information the author provided about him and his circumstance, but that was not the case. The second thing I was concerned about was Inca's self-involved attitude. She only wanted to solve cases to be famous. She even went ahead and tried locating the will without her team. This is not a trait I would want my children exposed to. The third was the word "fat" as used to describe Cyril. It is an insensitive word, no matter it was used to describe someone everyone disliked. I am concerned with the lessons kids would acquire from reading this story.
For these reasons, I give it a rating of 2 out of 4 stars. I also found some errors, mostly missing or misused punctuation marks.
Considering that the book is quite long at 180 pages, I recommend it for children below ten years. It could be a great read as a bedtime story, so an adult would have the chance to straighten out the worrisome areas.
