Soul Seeker: The battle between good and evil resides with… by Kaylin McFarren follows the story of Benjamin Poe, a devoted firefighter, and Crighton, Lucifer’s best soul catcher. It was written in the third-person and was divided into two parts. The first part focused on Benjamin Poe while the second part, the more lengthy part, the spotlight was on Crighton. It is a paranormal mystery novel that would make you scream and almost make you giggle. It is the first book in the series, Gehenna. This book finely combines horror and romance.

Benjamin Poe has spent the past four years of his life in a maximum-security prison on death row. For over the past years he was yet to divulge the motive behind his irredeemable crime. A crime that made a loving and protective husband and father become the “most feared and hated man ever lived” according to residents of Lochton, Illinois. Finally, after several inquiries, he confessed his truth to his self-absorbed lawyer, Pierce Beaudoin. There, he tells Beaudoin the true story behind the murder of his only son, Gabriel. What could the true story be? And what connection could Crighton have to do with this?

Crighton was a soul-collecting underworld demon ranked as Lucifer’s number one soul-catcher. He was on a mission to catch the soul of an angel named Ariel for his master. Instead, he gets kidnapped by a group of rugged scientists, The Sovereign Sector. They are notorious for their experiments on supernatural beings. Several twisted events and challenges force Crighton and Ariel to make life-altering choices. Will Ariel’s tender and loving ways be enough to change the evil Crighton? Or will he always be loyal to his master?

What piqued my interest in reading this book was the prison scene where Poe told his lawyer an unbelievable supernatural story about the killing of his son and how it all originated. This is the first time I’m reading a book on soul collecting demons. I didn’t know what to expect from this book. I have read some books on demons, and this book still floored me. Crighton was sort of both the villain and the hero in this novel.

One thing I loved while reading this novel was the plot twist. You couldn’t predict what would happen in the next scene. Crighton was at first portrayed as the worst of all, but as we read on we come across his redeeming qualities that leave us guessing. Kaylin is an excellent character developer. Every single character, even Crighton, was developed in such a way that they became real through the pages. The pacing of the novel was done to perfection. It was not too fast, it wasn’t too slow. Every scene had a perfect pace that blends in with the plot of the novel. It was thrilling. Another reason I like this book was that the author threw in a bit of romance in the plot. We all know a form of romance spices things up in novels, and that’s exactly what it did in this novel. It made the story a bit more relatable.

I’d like to applaud Kaylin McFarren on how skillful she is in whipping up a compelling plot and memorable characters. She is a force to reckon with. Once a reader opens the book the paranormal world comes alive in the reader’s mind because of the detailed, innovative, and descriptive way McFarren weaves the scenes. This makes it a hard book to put down.

I found nothing to dislike in this book and there was no obvious grammatical error which led me to believe that it was professionally edited. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is a very thought-provoking book with amazing concepts. It has enough twists and turns to keep readers at the edge of their seats. I highly recommend this book to lovers of fantasy, mystery, and paranormal or supernatural novels with a bit of forbidden romance.
