Review by emily3 -- The Raven's Trail (Book 1)
The Raven’s Path Book 1 by Liz D Mark is a charming adventure geared towards those audiences that like a little bit of history with their adventuring! I would rate this story 3 out of 4 stars. The reason for the 3-star rating is that history is not typically the type of book I am interested in, but the writing and the story is way more deserving than a 2-star rating. The story is written from the perspective of several characters.
The first character that appears is Adsila, a Native American girl who desperately wants to become the Chenesi of her village Tula Tribe. This role, however, is only for males. She then describes waiting for the head of their tribe, the Shaman, to assign her someone to be married to. While waiting, we meet Kaye, the Shaman’s son and Tribe prince. There is slight romance between these characters, but only tension.
The next character that we meet is Chloe Doyle, a Smithsonian worker that is fascinated by Native American history. She finds a strange stone at work one day, with Native American symbols that light up when only she touches them! She then decides to search out answers to the mystery stone in Hot Springs, Arkansas. We then meet Mason, an art gallery owner, who is currently working with a client that is searching for a Native American artifact.
Mason Green specializes in finding pieces that don’t want to be found, especially with his PI friend Foster. In searching for this artifact for his client, Mason ends up going to Hot Springs as well. Through an interesting weaving of stories, Chloe and Mason are brought together to find the Valley of Vapors and return this mystery stone to its home. This journey to return the stone leads Mason and Chloe to different Native American sites, where magical events bring them closer together and serve to further deepen the mystery.
In the end, each of the different story lines converge to reveal the biggest mystery of all: why they were brought together. This story will delight those that love learning while they are being transported to another world through reading. It is a delightful story full of mysteries that end up being related to each other through ancient magical ways.
The author uses descriptions to transport the reader and make them feel as though they truly are seeing the scene for themselves. The imagery truly serves to deepen the immersion of the reader and brings the story to life. With a combination of magic, adventure, history, and a little bit of romance, this story is almost guaranteed to appeal to you in some way. This is simply the first book in the series, so I encourage you to pick up this book and immerse yourself in the world of Chloe and Mason as they navigate a story in Native American history!
