Review by littlebethstar -- The MISOGI Method
Are you an extremist when it comes to maintaining discipline? Or do you crave to bring order and discipline in your life for attaining a sense of mental peace? If so, then Jody B. Miller's The Misogi Method is the right book for you all. Being a reader belonging to the aforesaid category of readers, I thoroughly enjoyed reading and reviewing this book. As a TEDx speaker and the author of the bestseller 'From Drift to Shift',Jody B. Miller has truly come up with an excellent topic to pen her thoughts on; that too in a lucid flow of narrative.
The very reason I decided to review this book was the fascination I felt towards the book title term The MISOGI Method and its tagline THE WAY TO ACHIEVE LASTING HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS. And the author has definitely done a fabulous job of capturing the essence of this tagline in the book. For all those unaware, MISOGI is a traditional Japanese Shinto ritual of physically cleansing the body in freezing cold water to purify oneself, usually by standing under a waterfall; a mark of purification. However, in the present time period, a MISOGI means a lot more. MISOGI method symbolizes going beyond our comfort zone to achieve the very best possible.
I truly appreciate and love how Jody B. Miller has tried to ingrain the concept of MISOGI subtly, right from the start with a dedication note penned to the readers " To you, the reader, as you seek to break out of dullness and into the glorious life you are meant to LIVE." Additionally I loved how the entire content has been meticulously structured for ease of quick reference. The entire content has been broken down into short chapters with bulletin takeaway pointers at the end of each chapter which is also a bonus for those who wish to reinforce the points later on and for those who are lazy at reading numerous pages of self - help content. The narrative style is very smooth and casual which makes it easy for even novice readers to efficiently grasp the concept without any difficulty. Another factor that made the book appear quite appealing was the fact that it offered the readers a chance to introspect their lives via means of worksheets with quick Q & A sections.
However, the copy I received did include few grammatical errors and typos which occasionally did made me to open Google to verify the word and then return back to the start of the paragraph to reabsorb the essence of the message being shared. Also the book does make a quick mention of religious deities which was perfectly fine with me. However the reason why I choose to mention this as a disclaimer here is that the author has made certain factual errors within this aspect. For instance she quotes Goddess Lakshmi and Deity Ganesha; former as Hindu and Buddhist deity while latter is quoted as Buddhist deity. This appears slightly controversial in my perspective because both these deities may be worshiped by the two religious communities however they are primarily Hindu deities and Buddhist communities worship other deities as their main and some pray and respect Goddess Lakshmi and deity Ganesha due to their primordial link with Hinduism. This statement holds a potential for being controversial to Hindu readers. Additionally there are few factual errors as well that could become a controversial issue for Indian communities. And for all these reasons, I choose to rate this book 3 out of 4.
Happiness is a natural emotion however today it has become more of a luxurious commodity that people are willing to invest and pay for to attain it. Incorporating the idea of MISOGI is truly an amazing way to bring back the happiness that we may have lost in the pursuit of success and societal norms. Which is why I choose to end this review with the evergreen quote "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times. If one only remembers to turn on the light" - By Albus Dumbledore ( (Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling). You can never know for MISOGI might be the light that you may be seeking in your life at the moment!
