Soul seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a phenomenal book that brings the themes: thriller, horror, and romance together. It explores the relationships between spiritual beings and humans. The book is set in a small town called Lochton. It starts off with the complicated life of Benjamin Poe who has a troublesome son and a marriage that’s on the rocks. Due to some events, he gets acquainted with a demon named Crighton and his life spirals downhill after that. The book follows Crighton, the main character, in his adventures as a soul catching demon.

The book explores the balance between good and evil and how our actions have consequences. This is shown in the first part of the book when we're first introduced to Crighton. What I liked most about the book was Crighton’s character development throughout it. I didn’t like his character in the beginning but he grew on me with every chapter that I read. His character showed that there’s good in everyone and that not everyone that we think is bad is completely rotten to the core.

I liked the love story featured in this book. Two unlikely individuals were brought together by a power that was greater than their own and despite their apparent differences, they still fell for each other. Forbidden love is always enticing to read about. Crighton showed a willingness to change for his soul mate, Ariel, and that was also beautiful to read about.

What I disliked most about the book is that it felt like I read two books because of the two different storylines that were in it. One storyline was of a firefighter trying to save his marriage and his son and the other was the relationship between spiritual beings. Even though Crighton was the common denominator in both storylines, I still felt like I was reading two different storylines with little correlation. The story about the firefighter left me feeling unfulfilled. I felt like there was more to Benjamin Poe’s story than how it ended in the book. The conclusion to his story felt rushed and I would’ve loved to read more about it.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4! This is because of how I felt about the two storylines in the book having little correlation to each other. The storylines would've been captivating as two separate books. I would recommend this book to a mature audience as there are several scenes of blood and gore throughout it. I would also recommend this book to people aren’t religious or aren’t affiliated to extreme religious beliefs as it does feature some spiritual beings found in Christianity. Overall this was a good read!
