Voulhire is at peace. The threat of the Riva is conquered, the cancerous corruption of the Mianorans has been eliminated, the demons of Virko have been overthrown and Voulhire is coming back stronger than ever. Even the Church has become stronger, or so it seems.

Unbeknownst to the people of Voulhire, the Emperor of Lullabies is planning something big and Voulhire appears to be in those plans. The Emperor visits Galen and gives him an ultimatum to cause the death of someone or forfeit the lives of his friends. Galen being the loyal friend he is chooses the lives of his friends even though his conscience weighs heavily on him. He manipulates Demetrius and Rowan to achieve this goal.

Across the kingdom in Soulhire, king Nartik, Paladin Harper; the daughter of Nartik 's predecessor, and the eoidi dance a dangerous dance of power. They each pursue their endgames at the expense of the other. They are so caught up in the thrills of their games that do not catch the scent of terror on the horizon.

Welcome to Voulhire; The Ascension of Akistry is another fantastic novel by Matthew Tysz. It is written in the same simple and beautiful style as the other books in the Welcome to Voulhire book series. This book is properly edited as I seemed to find no errors as I read it. Although this is the fifth in a book series, Matthew Tysz makes it feel new.

I especially loved how the author explored the dynamics between male friends. The exploration of the dynamic proved to be very fascinating as it displayed a version of male friendship that is seldom shown in this genre of fiction. This is a testament to the brilliant character development that goes on in this book.

One more that I appreciate about this book is that the lore and world of the book series are further expanded without contradicting what was written in the prequels to it. This is one of the things that I feel like most book series fall prey to but fortunately, it has not happened to this one yet.

The political scheming that the characters in this book are involved in is very engaging as it almost perfectly mimics the politics of the time period nearest to which the book is set in.

The only aspect of this book I truly disliked was this religious symbolism and the overt religion that is almost parallel to Christianity. It bothered me to the extent that I almost gave up on this book. Towards the end of the book, I felt like the author was truly to correct it but in my opinion, he was not that successful in rectifying it.

This is a book that I would gladly recommend to all fantasy readers especially the ones with a penchant for political intrigue. That being said, this book is not recommended for a young audience due to the profanity and sexual innuendos in it. Also, those with any aversion to things that draws some rather extreme parallels and conclusions to Christianity should avoid this book.

For the reasons stated above, I rate Welcome to Voulhire; The Ascension of Akistry 3 out of 4 stars.
