In Hunted by Sarah Biglow and Molly Zenk vampires roam freely amongst humans thanks to the education, outreach, and awareness programs created by the Vampire Human Alliance (VHA). Edith Dorset has dedicated both of her lives, human and vampire, to assisting in the VHA’s causes. Edith, along with other members of the VHA, have organized a live action role play (LARP) weekend where participants are separated into vampire and human groups and are taught about each race and the benefits of coexistence.

Edith’s weekend is turned upside down when the Paxton brothers, her deceased fiance’s great-nephews, sign up for LARP activities. Darren Paxton is the older of the two and bares a striking resemblance to his great uncle. Darren and Edith are inexplicably drawn to one another however, each are battling their own reasons for resisting the temptation to give into their carnal desires. The weekend of heated glances and LARP activities takes a sudden turn when several vampire murders occur. It is revealed that a vampire hunter is in their midst. A trial for the supposed hunter is prepared but has the vampire organization done it’s due diligence and accused a hunter or an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire?

This story had many interesting concepts that set it apart from other vampire novels. I found that a world where humans and vampires are attempting to coexist was refreshing. Creating the VHA as an institution to bridge the relations between humans and vampires is a very creative idea. The various sub plots and twists keep the reader wanting more.

This novel did keep me wanting a lot more than twists and turns and despite the creativity of the story it is rife with plot holes and underdeveloped characters. Darren Paxton is presented as this lean, mean, vampire fighting machine and only a few chapters into the story he completely changes his mind about vampires and has come to fully accept them as a part of society. There is no progression of character development, the characters seem to go from one end of the spectrum to the other. The lack of character development also negatively affects the budding love story between Edith and Darren. The two characters very quickly go from barely acknowledging one another to being unable to resist kissing. Similarly, Edith bounces between making a decision to completely losing her resolve without explanation.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The gaps in plot and various writing styles make it obvious that the book is written by several authors. The concept behind the story is an interesting one however it was poorly executed. I believe this novel would be interesting to young adult readers searching for a quick book to pass the time.
