Lara's Story, written by Diane Merrill Wigginton, is a wonderful story that takes place in Ireland and Philadelphia in the mid 1800's.

Lara Flannigan lives in a very small home in a very large, poor family in Ireland. Suddenly tragedy strikes Ireland with a fungus called Potato Blight, eventually resulting in the Great Famine. Tragedy then strikes the Flannigan family personally with the heartbreaking loss of an important person in Lara's life, then the betrayal by someone Lara looked to for her security.

Lara faces starvation, poverty, violence and so much misery. She is rescued by a kind and loving couple, who adopts her and takes her to Philadelphia. Besides now having love and security, she has plenty of food, nice clothes, and a fine home.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I give it 3 stars because this is a great story. I love the descriptions of Ireland. When reading this story, I can find myself there in Ireland. I can see the beauty of Ireland; I see the green moss, the cliffs, the ocean. I smell the aroma of the ocean and the peat moss burning in the fireplace.

I didn't give it 4 stars only because it needed to be edited better. However, the story was truly a great story. I would recommend Lara's Story to anyone who enjoys stories that take place in other countries, in other time periods, and stories that are inspiring. It is refreshing to read a story that doesn't have profanity and erotic scenes.

:D Hi Linday! I also gave this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the minor editing errors. I enjoyed the story and feel that the author did paint a pretty picture of Ireland. I also liked that it was a story in a story, starting at the ending and then working it's way to how Lara got there. It was a clean read and think that anyone who likes historical fiction would enjoy this book. Thanks for your review. cd20
