Review by Mr_Wimbaum -- We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End
We are Voulhire: Someone Else’s End is the third book in Matthew Tysz’s We are Voulhire series. Once again, we follow the adventures of Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius. After the disaster which struck Virko, the three friends decide the best course of action is to seek an audience with the Eiodi. However, with a new Eiodi anointed the holy city of Yamon Soul is in mourning. So, after much persuasion on Galen’s part, the three decide to head to the capital, Soulhire. What will they find in Soulhire? Will Rowan finally face the demons of his past? Will Demetrius find the aid for Virko he has been desperately trying to get?
This novel is full of mystery and intrigue. Discussion of characters from earlier books happens in greater detail in this book, and their roles in the story are becoming increasingly clear. This is one of the major things I love about this book. The attention to detail is astounding. Tysz has done a wonderful job bringing the characters, their ambitions and plights, and the general settings of the story alive.
Once again, Tysz has produced a magnificent piece of writing. The editing of the novel appears professional, as I only found one very minor error. There is some coarse language in the novel, but no erotic scenes of any nature. Though there is an elevated level of graphic violence. For these reasons, I would not recommend the book to a younger audience.
Unlike the earlier installments, there were some things I did not enjoy. For example, Rowan and Demetrius have switched from the third person into first, making it unclear at times who is narrating the story. This is not a deal-breaker, just a little frustrating. Also, the events of the last two novels and this one take place in a much shorter timeframe (only three weeks) than seems plausible. Again, not a deal-breaker, but something I feel has made the story less credible. Lastly, without giving anything away, the end of the novel just stops as though Tysz got half-way through a paragraph and just decided to stop writing.
For these reasons, I found it much harder to be enthusiastic about this book as I was in the first two. It made it much harder to read for me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the book – just not as much as the first two. For these reasons, I only rate this book 2 out of 4. Although it is very well-written, the content falls a little short this time around. All-in-all I will still be checking out the next installments in the series.
