Review by Katie Canedy -- Devil in False Colors
Hezbollah is up to their old tricks again. But things will not be the same as last time as this terrorist group has gained a few allies since the events in the last book. Their tactics have changed so much that it has made the missions for the main protagonists more dangerous than before. Who has Hezbollah teamed up with this time? Will Lara and Uri be able to complete their mission without getting injured or killed in the process?
Devil in False Colors by Jack Winnick is the third book in the Lara and Uri series. This one can stand alone from the others, but I recommend that readers read East Wind first, and then read Devil Among Us before they read the third one. The reason for this is because there are references to events in the first two books, and readers that have read the other books will understand what the author is referring to.
I enjoyed the way that Jack Winnick describes the events throughout the story. The descriptions are so vivid and rich that the reader can imagine themselves being there as the events are happening. Sometimes, the suspense was so great that I was unable to put the book down to eat dinner! I just had to know what was going to happen next and would not stop until I knew.
The story with Lara and Uri was quite enjoyable as well. Ever since I started reading the series, I have been captivated by the chemistry that is between them. When I read the end of the book, the ending ended up becoming what I have been hoping for regarding these two. But, due to spoilers, I will not disclose what it is.
If there was one thing that I did not like in the book, it was the rape scene that was described early on. It was not explained in a way that was too informative, but it was enough to upset me. While it did not affect my enjoyment of this story, readers that may be sensitive to this information need to know about it. Because of this, I cannot recommend this book to children or even teenagers. But I do recommend it to anyone else that enjoys a compelling and bone-chilling thriller.
I believe that Devil in False Colors deserved four stars. I enjoyed the cast of old and new characters and the action-packed storyline. Sadly, there were over ten grammatical errors throughout the book that included punctuation errors, extra spacing, missing words, and incorrect word usages. Because of these errors, I have no choice but to rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. If another round of professional editing is done, Devil in False Colors will have no problems with earning a four-star rating. Even with the editing problems, this is still a great book to check out if the genre interests you.
