Hot Spots: Turn Your Enterprise Risk Management Practice into a Key Driver of Business Performance written by the featured author and experienced practitioner Douglas M. Brown is an effective road map in the field of risk management. It’s the third book in the Simmer System Series. It's also a useful and practical guide to executives, stakeholders, managers, and employees in organizations.

The author knows what he is talking about in every chapter, section, paragraph, and sentence of the book. He gives valuable pieces of advice and guidelines for potential risk managers in organizations. He thus walks them through the different phases in the life cycle of projects or "initiatives" as he calls them.

More importantly, in 15 insightful, condensed, and well-written chapters, the author provides risk managers with a useful and effective framework (i.e., the Simmer Approach). Not only does the author provide risk managers with practical tools (such as the Risk Matrix and the Rough-Order-of-Magnitude Estimator, among others) and techniques (such as the “5 why” technique and the BOGGSAT risk categorizing technique), but he also provides them with ready-to-go templates to handle potential risk events and “mitigate” their impact(s), from the initiation phase to the closeout and operational phases of corporate projects and programs.

I particularly enjoyed reading Chapter 15 in which the author shows the reader or potential risk manager how to conduct risk management in a resistant organization through implementing the Simmer System. I consider this chapter as the most valuable takeaway from the book.

This book was more than I expected. It holds my attention and interest from start to finish. I oftentimes found it difficult to stop reading as one chapter sets the stage for the following one. In this respect, the book is educational in that it contains enlightening and useful tips and lessons that readers would appreciate.

What really attracted my attention is the use of practical exercises added at the end of some chapters of the book to test the understanding of the reader.

I liked the real-life examples of organizations that failed because of a lack of risk management structures in them, such as the “XYZ Corp.” The author enhances the credibility of the messages and breakthroughs he sets out to get across by referring to his own effective experience in the field of risk management.

He uses a conversational style in his book to hold the reader’s attention and engage them. This outstanding style is embroidered with imagery and literary devices so that the reader enjoys reading the book.

The book is professionally edited, except for some typos as is the case on page 13, line 10 (Using “…they don’t need no stinkin’ risk management” instead of the correct “…they need no stinkin’ risk management” or “…they don’t need any stinkin’ risk management”) and page 58, line 10 from the bottom (Using “…insurance n” instead of the correct “…insurance in”).

I recommend this book to executives, stakeholders, managers, Government officials, and employees, among others, and I rate it 4 out of 4 stars as a reward for the knowledge load that the book bears. Additionally, the book contains no vulgar or profane words. I believe that the reader would gain a tremendous benefit from it. I consider myself lucky to have read this book.
