Review by Agava -- The Secret of Magic by Natassa Louppou
This is a review on the young adult fantasy novel (i)The secret of magic the forbidden box by Natasha louppou.(/i)
This creative novel follows Tania a young girl, who hosts a birthday party with a magician, blissfully unaware of what adventures it will lead her to. After the party, when she finds the magician's bag that he left behind, she discovers his rabbits also. She reaches in and finds a pocket watch. She closes her eyes, when she opens them, she finds herself in a room full of men dressed in suits and and women dressed in the most beautiful ball-gowns. The rabbit begins to talk to Tania. But,the most startling thing is that Tania recognises where she is, and has very little time before tragedy strikes. She has to be smart and with Mike the rabbits to help her,she might be able to help others as well as save herself on this magical journey of time-travel and friendship.
From the well developed characters to the event-full plot, this novel never leaves you bored. This novel is told in third person, which really allows it to give off a children's vibe. There is an element of change, as we see Tania seeing things from a different perspective after all her adventures. We also see friendship between Mike and Tania, which truly shows, that friendship can be found between the most unlikely people. The novel is based around the concept of time-travel and focuses on Tania's journey through history's major events including the sinking of the Titanic and world war II.
This book truly gives children first-hand experience of historical events, which I think will help them develop an interest in the topic. While the plot is predictable, I couldn't help but involve myself in the story, and wonder where Tania would end up next. There is an element of humour throughout the novel. The images created are very descriptive, and is a pleasure to read. I find it a quick read, and felt it was slightly rushed. However someone who enjoys a fun, quick read would be delighted with the outcome of this novel.
I would recommend this story for children aged 8 to 13, who are interested in time-travel or history. Profanity is seen twice throughout the book. The word "bastard" is used twice.
I would read this book a (b)3/4(/b). The plot was well-thought out, the characters were so likable, there was fantastic character building and the sense of adventure was compelling. However, my small negative point was that it was quite predictable, and felt slightly but overall the novel was a fun easy read.
