Review by Sugarsalt -- Return to Eternity by Jenni Barnett
Return to Eternity; book three of the Dreamtime Mysteries trilogy by the South Australian author Jenni Barnett. I will classify this book as historical fiction. In the book three, the main character, Rex Graham had a disorder to interact socially with the society. He wants to explore his missing aboriginal linage, along with his girl friend. Fortunate, she also had similar interest, has half race like him. However, each has own style and resources to achieve their dream with much honor and prosperity.
Personally, I loved to read the book with great interest for the background of the story. After, get along with due reading, the author narration held me complete the book more emotions and less drama. Most of the story was justified with personally written diary, letters and government order. This creates much authenticity to the fiction. Eve though, story travels in non linear order. That is, begins, with current period, then gradually shift to 17 the century, When Dr Joseph Bancroft was false convict for his treatment in London, sent as prisoner to Australia. Then shift due, back to current period, his great, grandson explores to the territory was at Yaraan Grove.
Even though, there is shift here and there, the time line about the each incident was clearly narrated. We can relate the relationship between the each character very easily. Due the half race, with less prevail age, in the society, the Bancroft family fought till brave against racist whites.
The negative side of the story his, lengthy. In order to prove the authentic, author depicts the most of diary writings, letters as it is. It seems read like semi autobiography. Then, when come to current period, we can able see the rush to conclude with quick and dramatic ending. Moreover, the art work was printed in between the story, which makes the reader, feel less imagine. It will be more comprehensive, if it will be added in the bibliography.
The style of the narration is very beautiful I like to appreciate it for the simple English. With almost nil profanity, i will recommend to all most to all age groups. I suggest this title for those who interested in reading the aboriginal Australians history, their ordeal, when English people enslave them. In order to understand more clearly, I will also recommend, other series in this trilogy, namely Native Companions, Along the Waterways by the same author Jenni Barnett and Captain Cook's Journal During the First Voyage Round the World by James Cook.
I Love to give three stars out four, for the authentic of novel. How the natives struggle to retain their ancestral land and how English people transform the land in to a great extent. From this, I can able picture of the Australia now and then.
