Review by nangel04 -- We are Voulhire: The Ascension of ...
There is no telling where the true danger lies in this fifth installment of Matthew Tysz’s We Are Voulhire series. With the tension growing between Galen and one of his best friends, a journey through an otherworldly jungle that threatens to kill any who dare set foot within, and a seductive, power-hungry mage laboring to open a dangerous portal, We Are Voulhire: The Ascension of Akistry is the most explosive book in this series so far. Galen knows that Meldorath is a threat to Voulhire, and he is willing to do anything to stop him, even risk his own life and the lives of his friends by traversing the Dire Vine Jungle in search of the prophet Akistry. Heaping all of his hope onto this prophet, Galen follows him to the heart of Yamon Soul to face Meldorath, all the while believing this mission has been sanctioned by God.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I really want to give it the highest possible rating, but due to a few too many typos, I am forced to rate it only three out of four stars. I cannot stress too strongly how disappointed this makes me because, other than that, I have not a single complaint. The typos do not detract from the otherwise great writing and storytelling that Tysz has accomplished in this book. After a rocky start in books one and two, I have come to enjoy delving into this created world of Voulhire. This installment has only heightened my enjoyment.
The very best thing about this world is the characters that Tysz has created. Coming from someone who, at one point, thought Galen and his friends were a disgrace to all main characters everywhere, this should say something. So, it took a little while for Tysz to develop these characters, but now that he has…wow. Galen is so incredibly complex that it is impossible not to be curious what else there is to know about him that has not yet been revealed. Demetrius is amazingly ambiguous that it keeps me on my toes just wondering if he is the most moral character or void of morality altogether. Rowan is just fun! Just as well, the other characters—and there are many—are all equally as well written.
With that being said, I challenge anyone to find fault in Tysz ability to bring all of these characters together in a way that seems anything but natural. There is so much going on that it seems impossible for all of these characters’ stories to eventually bleed together, yet they do. Aside from the characters, the world itself is quite creative and interesting, even if it is not what a reader of fantasy may be used to, or maybe it is even more interesting because it lacks the typical old-world feel common to fantasy novels. Either way, Tysz has proven to be a very talented worldbuilder.
This novel takes readers all over the land of Voulhire in a fast-paced, thrill seeking ride that will leave anyone with a sense of adventure anxious for more. I would definitely recommend this series to any reader who enjoys a good fantasy novel. However, definitely start at book one or you will be lost. If book one does not capture your complete attention, do not let that turn you away. Stick with this series and I can guarantee by the time you get here to book five, you will find that the journey was well worth it!
