Review by ephemeral_happiness -- Soul Seeker
A fantasy that transcends all barriers of Heaven and Hell, right and wrong, good and evil- Soul Seeker is an exemplary work of Literature that proves to be a wonderful read. Kaylin McFarren has woven a tale that is full of mystery, supernatural powers, human emotions and sub-plots that tug at your heart. What started as a dark tale went on to become a story that brought light with it. How love can transform a soul is the driving force behind this novel.
The 377-pages long story is firstly, about a human’s lifelong struggle and secondly, about the Reaper who causes all the suffering. I never expected the twist that came in the second half of the story and I believe that is what made the book all the more fascinating to me.
Benjamin Poe has been a true and honest man all his life, but there are secrets lurking in his house that can rip his life apart. Lexi is blinded by her love for their son, Gabriel, but who is Gabriel in reality? Is he the short-tempered, almost childlike boy who never grew up or is he the vengeful and cruel man that peeks from behind the facade, sometimes? The sudden appearance of a hooded man who was last seen forty years ago, fires breaking out of the blue in different parts of the town, the growing hostility of Gabriel towards his parents, secrets threatening to come out of the closet- are all these mere coincidences? Or, is there much more to this than what meets the eye? A night of terror, an instance of killing, an encounter that is too unreal to be true- all these put the lives of too many people at stake.
In the second half of the story, there is a shift in focus on the characters. Crighton has been the Reaper since as long as he can remember. But a sudden meeting with Ariel is all it takes for his present to crumble into pieces. Past secrets are dug out, revelations are made that shake the lives of everyone associated with the events, greater mysteries are unknotted, and everyone’s version of truth and lies weave together to form a labyrinth that brings together all the uncanny characters together. Kaylin did a wonderful job in creating the other universe in which Heaven and Hell are more intricately entwined than it seems. Sacrifices are made, blood is shed, revenge is taken, and above all, love and patience win.
In a wonderful blend of fantasy and reality, Soul Seeker presents to you the worlds of Heaven and Hell in a more human way. Kaylin has a beautiful way of storytelling and the constant shift in focus does not hinder the reader from enjoying the story. It is a tale of love and friendship, of good and evil, of angels and demons, and how there might be a dimension to all those that we refuse to see.
What I liked the most about this novel is the way it made me feel various emotions. I laughed and cried with the characters. All the major and minor characters were extremely well-developed which added to the plus points of the book. There wasn’t anything that I disliked much. This book provides you with a greater horizon and takes you on a ride that leaves you breathless and satisfied. The characters go through major transformations, justice is served, redemption takes place, and true love is rewarded.
The book was well-edited with a very few minor errors. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The storyline was gripping till the end. With a touch of professional editing, the novel would prove to be an exemplary piece of Literature.
