Do not be mistaken that the book Mister Pushkin Sees The Light, written by A.C. Michael, is only for children, I laughed my way through this wonderful book and have never loved a cat character more. Mister Pushkin is a Russian Blue, pedigree cat, who is looked after and rather spoiled by his owner, Klem. Both live together in relative harmony as long as the titular feline gets his way.

The book comprises twelve tales about the antics of this lovable and amusing cat. Mister Pushkin is a very special cat, with a big personality and ego. He loves his owner, Klem, but he desires to have freedom in the outside world without Klem walking him on a lead. This extraordinary cat also gets himself into trouble frequently by making poor decisions, normally concluding with a hilarious ending. Klem is an overprotective owner and is often preoccupied with worry for his beloved cat, but is also unsurprised at the many scrapes his cat finds himself in.

With typical cat characteristics, Mister Pushkin cannot resist his favorite food, salmon, and loves nothing more than lazing on the windowsill, relaxing into a peaceful slumber from the warmth of the radiator below. In his more energetic moments, he is happy to support Klem in his dislike of his secretary Ruth, taking his revenge wherever possible, and he also plays matchmaker between Klem and a lovely lady called Emma. Will a cat with so many talents live the adventurous life he desires, or will he settle for snoozing and salmon?

This book is very easy to read, especially as it is broken down into twelve tales. The writing is very descriptive and includes a lot of comical moments. The book is written from the viewpoint of the cat, which is excellent. It is entertaining to read about the cat’s feelings towards humans, how he feels about his delicious salmon and how he views the world around him. I found it amusing how highly the cat thought about himself and that it came as a bit of a shock to him when he realized he maybe overweight. The manipulation of his owner is also hilarious to read, and how the cat feels he is in charge of the relationship.

The book is fairly long for a children’s book, but it is written in easily understandable language. It includes some lovely descriptions of scenery and what Mister Pushkin observes in the world around him, which can easily transfer from the page to a child’s imagination. This is a brilliant book for an older child to read alone from around the age of eight, or for a younger child to read with an adult.

There are other characters in the book, but they are not hugely developed, this helps to make the book simpler for children and leaves the focus on this entertaining cat. Children will also appreciate that every tale has a comical aspect and provides opportunities to enjoy a few giggles. The tales also include adventures, supernatural activity, and cat calamity. One of my favorite parts was Mister Pushkin’s descriptions of his vet, with an absolute hatred for his method of taking his temperature, which is very undignified for such a magnificent feline.

I did not find any spelling or grammar errors, so it seems like the book has been exceptionally well-edited. There was nothing I disliked about the book, so I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It is best suited for children, but I can imagine any adult enjoying it. The book doesn’t contain any profanity or sexual themes, so it makes a perfect choice for a child. This book will make any reader laugh out loud and smile whenever they see a cat getting up to mischief.
