Review by anua24060 -- Shadow Game by A.M. Adair
Shadow Game by A.M. Adair is a fast-paced action thriller. This is the first book of an intended three-part series. Elle Anderson is a CIA assassin. She is sent to Iraq on a mission to cripple ISIS, a terrorist organization. Elle reunites with her team members in Iraq, whom she knows well from her previous assignments. They are Tex, an ex-soldier and a good friend of Elle and Eve and Jack, the team’s young tech savvies. They form their base in a complex along with other special operation forces. The team’s high command has given them the list of targets who are supporting ISIS. Elle classifies them based on the type of aid they give to ISIS- money, religion, and technology. Her first mission is to assassinate an Imam who is sowing hate and recruiting young men into the terrorist organization in the name of religion.
Amidst her assignments, Elle meets a handsome man named Julian and they both are attracted to each other. Elle also meets a man she calls, ‘Red Shirt’ about whom she is suspicious. The story follows Elle through the streets and shadows of Baghdad as she and Tex travel through the city under fake identities to assassinate their targets.
Shadow Game is the perfect definition of a page-turner. The story plunges into action right from the first chapter as Elle lands in Iraq. There is never a dull moment. The language used is simple, and even the technological and professional conversations in the book can be easily understood by the readers. The book also discusses the role of social media in spreading ISIS propaganda. The action scenes are thrilling, and the detail with which the author has written the book makes the readers feel as though they are witnessing the scene unfold themselves.
The thing I liked the most about the book is Elle’s character. She is a strong and smart woman, an excellent assassin, and a good leader to her team. Despite her many strengths, she also has her flaws, which she always admits to herself. This makes her character relatable and inspiring. Although the book is fast-paced, the author has taken the time to develop the relationship between Elle’s team members, which gave more life to the story. I also like the characters of Tex, Jack, and Eve and how they support Elle.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. There are very few errors that will not deter the reader from the flow of reading. There are a few instances of profanity and one scene of erotic nature. There are instances of violence that can be expected from a book of this genre.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because the editing is good, and I have enjoyed reading it very much. I recommend it to readers who love action thrillers and books with strong female leads. Because of the violence, I don’t recommend it to children.
