Grant Taylor travels to Saint Petersburg, Russia to settle his adventurous Uncle Randall’s estate after he is assumed to be dead. Randall had disappeared the previous year during an expedition to Zona, a mysterious unknown place in Siberia. Grant meets with Randall’s lawyer and the lawyer’s niece to ask about what happened and find out what to do next. He becomes suspicious that they aren’t giving him all the information about what happened to his uncle. Grant starts collecting as much information as he can about what happened to the expedition. He searches the internet, reads his uncle’s journals, and talks with a mysterious Russian spy. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to collect any more information because the government seems to want to keep it hidden for unknown reasons.

After falling in love with the lawyer’s niece, Irina, Grant is invited to a meeting to receive more information about his uncle’s fate. He learns that the expedition was attacked by bandits and the mysterious animals near Zona, but that his uncle’s body was never found. Events lead to there being another expedition set up to collect new plant specimens to make a profit, and to find out what happened to Randall. The new expedition consisting of Grant, Irina, scientists, and some guards set off to the dangerous, unexplored land to find out about the truth of what happened.

Zona: The Forbidden Land by Fred G. Baker is a fictional sci-fi/mystery, but it also includes adventure, fantasy, and romance. I thought the book was very entertaining and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I always wanted to know what would happen next. The author did an amazing job writing each of the characters and with the mystery factor of the story. Some of the character’s seemed to be withholding information which made their motives unclear and suspicious. That kept the story interesting.

In some parts of the story, the characters get very emotional which causes them to behave in strange ways. This book does contain profanity and many erotic parts. The author does describe the erotic scenes with some detail and some of it is controversial. There is also violence as the author describes the brutal deaths of some of the characters.

I am giving this book a rating of 4 out of 4. It was very well written with few mistakes. There was nothing I didn’t enjoy about it. It covers a wide array of genres to make the story entertaining for many people. People who love adventure, fantasy, mystery, and a bit of romance should definitely read this book.
