The Elfkin Journals: Blending of the Races by JDeVereS is a science-fiction novel about an elven race that is struggling to fight off a plague descending upon them. When an Elf man is looking through and translating a journal that was hidden in the library of his family's estate he reads the journeys of a particular group of these Elves who played a big part in gaining victory for their race. These Elfkin warriors were tasked with protecting a planet and preserving life but during a "Moon-Dance" one of them finds a timeline in which a race of acolytes are purging the solar system, so they and their leaders decide to help this other dimension to bring peace to their worlds. The journey from then on is filled with twists and turns, spatter with a little bit of romance here and there and tied together with the necessity of saving thousands of people from impending doom.
Positive aspects of the book are the descriptive language used and the character-building. The descriptions of the landscape and the characters or experiences are written in a way that lets the reader fully immerse themselves in the experience of the universe they are exploring in the pages. These landscapes can be awe-inspiring, daunting, and a place that you would want to run away to. The character building is extremely well done as it focuses on the emotions that each character would be feeling at any moment in time while giving the reader a good visual of what they look like throughout the novel including any changes that might occur and facial expressions throughout as well.
Negative aspects a few but the one that stands out would be the lack of linear storytelling. The time skips and point of view changes can make it a little bit confusing to read, but it fits with a key value of the tale; life and time are not linear things. Once you get the hang of it, this becomes less of a problem as the story progresses, but at the beginning, it can be a little confusing.
This well-written novel deserves a 3 out of 4 for the excellent visuals provided by the author and the entertainment the plot provides, at times the book becomes hard to put down even if you know that you need to go to sleep early for a specific reason. The reason it is not 4 out of 4 is that there were one or two spelling mistakes now and again, they were small but obvious, and occasionally there would be un-necessary hyphens or quotation marks. Apart from that, the editing was overall well done and professional looking.
As someone with a group of friends who love to read I would recommend it to the ones that love stories about space mainly. However, this story is also good for people like myself who love tales set back in the time when dragons were believed to exist. Or travelers using bows arrows and swords to defeat their enemies, or dangerous creatures that they encountered in the woods on their journey.
