High Flying by Kaylin McFarren follows the story of Skylar Haines, a troubled stunt pilot with a tragic past, who gets transported to another time. In which she has not been born yet, and her father’s death is just one week away from happening. Skylar takes this second chance that life has given her as an opportunity to eradicate her father’s mistakes and find herself in the process.

One of the most appealing aspects of the book is the way it’s written. The author describes the story in a way that keeps the reader engage with the narrative without being too distracted by over the top writing. It’s a style of writing that is rather simplistic but somehow complements the story really well. The plot of the story is intricate and original, which makes the experience of reading enjoyable.

In another hand, the weakest aspect of the book are its characters. It was really difficult to connect with the characters and their emotions when they were so flat and dull. They were not written in a bad way per se, but their intentions and ambitions were hard to follow because of the lack of depth they had. There were instances where the characters would go through horrific and traumatic events and their reactions would seem off and robotic. The deficiency of soul and humanity made these characters feel like they were indeed characters, and not real people that the reader could relate and connect to. Another weak aspect of this story was its ending. The conclusion felt thusly rushed and rather impactless. Characteristics and questions that were extremely important throughout the story were left unanswered, leaving the reader unsatisfied and confused with the lack of answers they got.

I rate High Flying 2 out of 4 stars due the lack of connection I feel for the characters as a reader, and the shortage of fulfillment I was left with after reading the story. The book was well written and the plot was intricate and interesting to read. I found myself enjoying the story at times, but my inability to care for these characters made me not give this book a higher rating.

Even though this book was not for me, I believe people can still enjoy it. If the reader it’s looking for a fun story with an interesting plot, and do not care for in depth connections with the characters they are reading about, I think this book will suit their preferences really well.
