Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature: How Civilization Destroyed Happiness is an eye opening work of non fiction written by Chet Shupe, who years ago was an electronic engineer designing missile guidance systems. When he was diagnosed and successfully treated for Attention Deficit Disorder(ADD) at 43, he began to question the unnatural way we lead our lives which resulted in this book where he takes us on a journey, from evolution of man to the current COVID-19 era and sites with convincing examples why our quest for happiness will be futile if we remain untrue to our nature. Chet says that this materialistic systemized world which stems from unfounded fear of the future has led us to live an isolated life, drowning in negativity and suffering in silence, when we are created to be emotional, spiritual and social beings.

I am awed by Chet's ability to show us the path to a solution for our never-ending problems in life. His concept of 'brotherhood' and 'sisterhood' has made me understand my husband's 'mancave' and my 'lone tiger' state, ironing out a few creases in our union. Thank you Chet. It is a relief to hear him say that it is not our fault when we get sucked into the vacuum of self doubt and grief, when we fall short of expectations placed on us by this unnatural, fenced-in, crying wolf system. I like the hope he has in the survival of our humanity and how it would rise to the surface in unison when our species is threatened, like the global outpouring of support during the current the pandemic. He removes our blinkers and helps us to lower our barriers and shows us a world as it is meant to be lived, as a family.

This book leaves a positive impact on its readers, despite the views being idealistic, hence impossible to implement en masse, but it's the small changes that make a big difference. I did stumble across a few typos in the introduction which are negligible, otherwise the book is well edited.

I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars for getting into the core of our chaotic lives and daring to tell us what we should have known had we listened to our hearts, and for presenting his philosophical views in an easily digestible form for us.

I would recommend Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature: How Civilization Destroyed Happiness by Chet Shupe, for those who want to understand the mystery that is human nature and for those of us who are floundering in the dark, in the rat race of life, it is a beam of light. I believe it should be read to our youth in schools. It will help them to understand each other better, it might save lives. This book deserves a place among our beloved collection. Read, be enlightened and pass it on.
