'We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies' is the first book of the 'We are Voulhire' series by Matthew Tysz. It explores the kingdom through the perspectives of various characters.

The main protagonist, Galen Bray, knows only survival before he comes to Voulhire, a land full of opportunities, to take care of his late uncle's forge. Simultaneously, the newly-appointed Lord Eldus tries to bring fortune to the small village of Hillport, and help it move on from its bad experience with his successors, one of them being the power-hungry mage Meldorath.

The book is excellently written with sophisticated vocabulary, a writing style that fits the story, and no visible errors. The writer does a great job of building Voulhire, where imagination, science, and spirituality come together to create a captivating setting. His writing style compliments the story and makes it more believable for the reader while also creating effect to keep them engrossed.

Nevertheless, there could have been improvements with the placement of character and plot. The writer does justice to the characters by describing their thoughts and opinions in detail, however as there are multiple characters, it is difficult for the reader to make connections between them and the plot. This is especially the case for the main character, Galen, whose story arc seems irrelevant to the events at Hillport, which have great importance in the book.
These connections will become more clear in the following books of the series, but as this book serves as an introduction, it would have made sense to focus on only part of the story and introduce the rest later.

Overall, I give the book 3 out of 4 stars , as it is captivating and promises a great start to a unique series that will be enjoyed by fantasy fans. It ends with cliff-hangers that leave the readers wondering what to expect, surely motivating them to read the following books and find out! I would prefer a slightly different and simpler approach to an introduction book, but I have no serious problem with the author's method.

This book is recommended for fans of fantasy fiction who do not mind reading a series. It may be less favourable for those who want a lighter or shorter read, but anyone willing to invest time and effort in this series is sure to appreciate it! It has a few uses of profanities and may not be appropriate for children.
