Review of Overcoming Adversity ( Relaunched)
Overcoming Adversity by Nelson J. Fowlkes is a story of resilience, determination, and grit. It is a story that encourages readers to keep going, fight for what is right, and never give up! The author shares his personal and courageous story of how he turned” opposition into opportunity”.
What I liked most about the book is the way the author delves into so many facets of his personal and professional life to give a well-rounded picture of his struggles and his successes. The author reveals through his stories that even the smallest details of his life impacted who he has become. I loved that so many of the details were timeless and relatable. He shared that throughout his life many different people influenced him, and it was those experiences that shaped his belief system, his values, and his thinking. I could relate to his belief that our experiences and environment from childhood impact who we are and how we experience things throughout life. Like the author, I also resolutely sought out a college education believing it could be a pathway to a better life, and it was.
I loved that he shared the seemingly insignificant but powerful turning point that caused him to make a commitment to always do his best in all things. So many times, in life it is a single person who starts a chain reaction in someone’s life. Sometimes a positive one and unfortunately sometimes a negative one, but I love that the author shares a teacher who simply showed interest and concern became the catalyst for his growth and commitment to excellence. I love that throughout the book he sprinkles commentary such as “Many times in life, we don’t know the source from whence our blessings may come”. It is such a simple phrase but one that can help the reader engage in thoughtful introspection. As an Army Veteran, I particularly enjoyed learning about his military career. His struggles highlighted the fact that we often learn and grow the most during challenging times. He credits the military with teaching him discipline independence and self-control and I have always considered the military as the foundation for my mental and physical strength and discipline as well.
What I did not like about the book was at times the sections within the chapters were very short, and the discussions lacked substance. I did not always understand the purpose of sharing a particular story or the lesson learned from the experience. Ultimately everything fit together well, but sometimes while reading I was seeking more answers and details.
Overall, this was a really well-written book. I give it a 3 out of 4 stars . The beginning of the book read almost flawlessly but was a little less polished as it continued. It did not take away from the flow of the book but was noticeable. I would recommend this book for people of all ages and anyone who loves reading stories about overcoming struggles. While this is not a self-help book, it is a very helpful and powerful picture of what resilience and determination looks like personally and professionally
