Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth is a unique young-adult fantasy novel which follows Amanda, an eighteen-year-old who is good at martial arts but not much else. After being caught in an accident, Amanda has no choice but to accept the help of a strange creature, and that’s where she begins her journey to becoming the acolyte of truth, the prophesied savior of the world. And not a moment too soon, because while she has been given the responsibility to protect, another being only wants to grow more powerful through death and destruction. It is Amanda’s fate to go up against this evil, but only if she can become strong enough in time.

I was very interested in a particular description the author used for this book, and after reading, I can confirm that Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth is somewhat similar to shonen anime – especially in the way characters and their abilities developed. The story begins with the main character not really caring about anything besides trying to understand her little sister, and then she suddenly has the power and responsibility to take care of the world, forcing her to grow in strength and ability and depth as well.

But, regardless of how much I enjoyed it, this story was not perfect. First off, the author, Antoine Bonner is clearly new at writing, and I can imagine he is young and that this is his first book. But the story has other faults aside from the writing aspect. For starters, the beginning is kind of dull and does not really inspire the reader to want to continue with the story. When things did pick up, it was because the author used a lot of strained scenarios and really forced drama. Characters acted in ways that normal people wouldn’t act just to create tension that didn’t really stick at the end of the day. Also the editing was not very good, and I found a lot of typos that would have been easily spotted with a round of proofreading. I think the author has done well so far in the way of conceptualizing his unique ideas, but this story could be a lot better with a little more time put into it.

For now, my rating of Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth is two out of four stars. I would have rated it three stars if not for the typos.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy action novels and modern fantasy. It contains profanity but should be suitable for teen-aged readers and above.
