Tale of the seventies is a book by David Done containing seven short stories ; point to point after, blind San Franciscans, the cat burglars, the three card shuffle, the San Francisco adventure, and the short unhappy life of Terrence McAker. It also contains a novella titled yesterday's snow. Verily from the book all the stories were written between the year 1970 to 1975 and so portrays interesting features of an old urban city.
The plot of the stories were set in San Francisco with the stories touching each issues arising from every walk of a San Franciscans' life; love, dance, music, urban life, robbery, drug abuse and its effects, gambling, sex, homosexuality, all unfolding gradually story after story.
The interesting characteristics I like about this book is the literary skill of David Done, he was able to bring reality into clear words, forming clear picture of the happenings in the book, this quality also extends to the build of the characters, characters speech and even the environment. Even if the stories were short, it's flow were so comfortable that it has the readers attention well. It is also worthy of note that despite the stories involving everyday life activities, the presence of indecent expression were well controlled. The book was also outstandingly edited there was no typo or grammatical errors, this also made the reading an enjoyable comfort.
If there is anything I dislike about this book it is the novella, it is not easily understandable as nothing is told about the characters especially the protagonist, there were no instance of his introduction and so the readers were being kept in the dark about his past, abilities or his physical description. Also the way the novella changed the mood of the book from successive interesting short stories to an uninteresting book is not laudable.
After all these being noted I would rate the book "3 out of 4 stars". The book was interesting from the start, carrying the reader along until the part of the novella which was no as good as the short stories.
Lovers of short stories, lovers of street life stories, those who like stories of old city setting would find a new favorite in this book and should not hesitate to add this book to their bookshelves. Also those who despise street life And young ones under eighteen should maintain a good distance between themselves, their bookshelves and this book.
