Navigating through life can be quite challenging without the practice of several values that govern our interactions with self and others. Anthony Jacob Braaten expounds on twelve skills that one can practice in order to live a more rewardingly satisfying life. How are these qualities inculcated in our day to day lives? How do we channel into our inner being and unearth the underlying potential in us to the outside world? This is essentially a guide to lead happier and more fulfilling lives in spite of the challenges we face on a daily.

I love the quotes at the beginning of every key thematic point. This ice breaker shapes and structures the discussion for the rest of the conversation. One such phrase is by Ayn Rand, “The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” Furthermore, at the end of every attribute, the author leaves ample space for one to journal how they feel and what they could do in their present lives to exemplify the skill learnt. Unlike other self-help books I’ve come across, Anthony Braaten depicts an understanding, gentle and easy demeanor rather than a condescending tone.

The book is brief, precise and makes use of simple vocabulary that is easy to grasp and understand without any strain. One can read it in phases without having to rush as each section is independent. However, this being a self- help book requires the reader’s effort to bring life and fulfil the intended purpose of the book. Merely reading the book like a novel does not do any justice to the book. The reader has to be intentional to achieve the maximum best from this book.

I rate Let’s Help You Self-Help 3 out of 4 stars. The book is reader-centered and quite engaging. The author, writing from a patient’s perspective would easily resonate with any human being going through a crisis in their life. The writer jolts down some of his experiences that have shaped up his view of life. By putting himself out there, he creates a serene environment in which the reader can learn, relate to and make wiser decisions regarding how to live their lives to their utmost potential.

I would recommend this book to young people seeking to find their purpose in life, middle-aged people who are open to unlearning what society dictates and embracing the core values that make their conscience clean and at peace, old people who would love to rewrite their story, guide and lead the younger generation, people ailing from depression but willing to take a profound step in order to lead a happier life and anyone willing to seek help and guidance, challenge themselves, take risks and grow in life.
