Review of How To Be Successful
How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is a self-help nonfiction that addresses key areas where people need to pay attention to in order for them to lead successful lives.
He brilliantly shared the answers to interviews of carefully successful people, people he also admired. He aimed to share the perspectives and experiences to inspire others. And it worked, at least for me.
Having gone through an awful series of health problems himself, he not only adopted positivity to bounce back, but he also now never hesitates to use his own not so favorable background to inspire others. M. Curtis McCoy believes that anyone can be successful as long as they are inspired and passionate about making a difference and work hard towards it. He credits his successes to his mother. And she was also featured in one of the interviews.
I appreciated the thoughtful interview questions and scriptural references a lot as they touched important areas of one's life. So much so that I found myself answering the interview questions too, as I read. This helped me reflect about my own life. He also explored lots of interesting aspects of life, such as creating new habits, money and how it's a personality enhancer. He did this so concisely it was refreshing to read. Even though they were things most people (ambitious people) already know.
Unlike many self-help books, M. Curtis McCoy did something unique in this book. He shows us, with some examples, a few of the struggles people face when they become successful. For example, some people suffer criticisms, some others suffer strains in their relationships with friends or families or both. As he puts it, "You'll realize that you start to have less in common with your old friends on the road to success".
Generally, I enjoyed the book. It's a short book with only 185 pages. The only thing I was uncomfortable with at first was the font in which it was written. It looked like it was typed with a typewriter. But as soon as I got used to it, I began to flow. It was also professionally edited. As a result of this I am rating it a 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend to it to lovers of self-help books. However, if you find repeated written interviews (with different persons though) uncomfortable, it may not appeal to you. I do not recommend to all religious sects as it contains Biblical references except where they are open-minded.
