Review of Last Another Day
On the day humanity fell, living nightmares walked the streets as the world around them burned. Once loving and devoted, Morgan’s now undead husband traps her in the shower. After managing to escape, she comes face to face with the brutal reality of what the world has become.
Max, an army deserter, races home to save his family. Logan, estranged from his parents, finds his way back to his childhood home to rescue his mother. Neither is prepared for the nightmare that awaits them. When their paths cross, they team up, and their lives are changed in ways unimaginable.
The world is in chaos, and Captain Breytenbach and his team have seen their fair share of the macabre. But nothing is as horrific as the scene that he witnesses one night at a kindergarten school on the shadowy streets of Johannesburg. It is a scene that will forever haunt his dreams and waking moments, but out of it, Breytenbach finds a love he will give his life to protect.
With the advent of hell on earth, and monsters roaming the streets in the shape of loved ones, death is not only certain it is a welcome escape. Yet, in the midst of it all, there are those who fight to stay alive, those who fight to protect the defenseless, those who fight to give humanity a chance.
Last Another Day is the first book in the thrilling apocalyptic Dangerous Days series by South African writer Baileigh Higgins and deserves nothing less than a 4 out of 4 stars rating. I cannot recall the last time a zombie novel commanded my attention so completely. The emotive narrative and realistic plot development take one on an emotional rollercoaster. The character development was outstanding and easily one of my favorite things about this book. Higgins took great care in crafting each character with complex and relatable traits that have the reader fully vested in their situation, and the organic dialogue was just as compelling.
The book had several captivating high points that enhanced the plot’s realistic appeal. In the face of incredible savagery and looming human extinction, the best and worst of humanity are laid bare. It is simultaneously inspiring and shocking. I was uplifted by the resilience and bravery of heroes like Morgan and others like her. Sadly, where good is in abundance, there will always be pockets of evil as some survivors chose to prey on the defenseless, and their actions were appalling. Also, the author did not hold back in describing the violence in graphic detail. This was to be expected for a book of this genre. I did not feel that it was in any way gratuitous but served to move the narrative along.
Another high point that I mentioned earlier was character development. One of my favorites was Angie. Despite playing a relatively minor role, her impact was striking. Angie was as beautiful and innocent-looking as she was unapologetically manipulative and self-obsessed. While I did not care for her at all, I appreciated how realistically she was portrayed. Without giving too much away, what I will say is that in the face of a world that had become hell on earth, not to mention an all-consuming unrequited love, Angie's selfish disposition degenerated into something ugly. By the time anyone caught on, it was much too late.
I could not find any fault with this book. It was well-written, and the editing was impeccable. Despite the grim central theme, the storyline was nicely balanced with lighter themes of love, rebirth, romance, friendship, and family. Without a doubt, the maximum rating is well-earned. Graphic scenes of violence, sex, and strong language make this book suitable for mature readers only. The author included a riveting excerpt from the second book, Fear Another Day, and I cannot wait to read it. Last Another Day was a fantastic publication, one that fans of The Walking Dead or any other thrilling zombie apocalypse adventure story should not pass up.
