In a world where being different is almost a death sentence, young Roeg finds himself in just that sort of situation. He doesn’t match anyone else in his village and several tribe members refuse to let him forget it. It seems he is doomed to one day be cast out into the surrounding woods alone, where he will ultimately perish.

For Sephonei, her world has been effectively flipped upside down. She has gone from simple merchant’s daughter to rune hunter so fast it made her head spin. But now she will be truly tested again the mainland’s and all the creatures and secrets it hides on a quest to collect the coveted dragon runes.

Ryan Carriere crafts an intense world full of creatures and dangers that keep you on your toes and characters that you can’t help but root for in the first book of his series Heroes of Atlantis: Legend of the Dragon Runes: (An Epic Fantasy Series).

Carriere bounces between the two main characters, Sephonei and Roeg, often enough to keep you interested in both while also putting you right on the edge of a cliffhanger in between each jump. This pulls you through the story and leaves you wanting more once it ends. Luckily, there is a book two for eager minds that want more of the story. While writing the dialog for each character, he does a good job of keeping the point obvious despite using wording that leans more toward what one would assume a neanderthal would use. It helps keep the fact that this is a different time and place in mind while helping to transport you into the world.

At times the language can also feel a tad slow due to trying to make sure that the point is made, however. But if you just keep going then it will pick back up. It’s a bit like the tides in that regard. There are pictures of some of the characters and creatures throughout to help readers picture just what the author sees which tends to help younger readers who are still working on imagery.

Because of the unique story, the imagery, and how easy a read this book is I would give it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to any kid who is just finding their love of reading. Middle schoolers will find this book entertaining. Since it is a series, it will help them make it back to the library or bookstore for the next ones in the series instead of them having no clue where to go next, which can be a bit overwhelming.
