Review of Whale of Wonder
The book, Whale of Wonder, is a children’s book written by Marie-Paule Mahoney. In this book, the author presents the impact of humans on aquatic life, by narrating a story of two orca whales, namely, Tahlequah, who is the mama whale, and Notch, her son.
The story begins with mama whale and her son talking about their pods, the sounds they make, their uniqueness, and how the beasts (humans) harm them. During this conversation, Notch asks his mother why humans hunt them and why she carried her dead child with her for days and swam across the ocean. To these questions, mama whale gives him concerning, yet truthful answers. She also tells him how the whales of their pod swim together, care for, and protect each other. So, to know the story and facts about these whales, you will have to read this book.
Whale of Wonder is an amazing children’s book that has 37 pages. The illustrations given in the book are done by Ginger Triplett. This book has a great amount of information put forth most simply and admiringly. The author has done a wonderful job in giving facts about these whales and also the threats they encounter. I especially appreciate the author’s research in providing us with the real information.
The best thing about this book is that it is highly attractive with various colorful illustrations of the whales, underwater structures, etc. I loved how beautifully the author has conveyed the message of the ecological imbalance created by humans and the ways aquatic creatures are being affected by them. It also sheds light on the ignorance of people who dump plastics into the water bodies, release harmful chemicals from the factories into the water, and so on. I was completely moved by this story. It is heart-touching. Stories like this one help create compassion among the children towards animals. It makes them realize their responsibility towards nature and other living species. Inculcating these ideas early on will definitely make this planet a better place to live.
There is absolutely nothing that I disliked about this book. This book was an eye-opener for me. It reminded me of my duties to protect Mother Nature. I am grateful that I came across this book. This book seems professionally edited as I did not find any errors while reading. With that being said, I rate Whale of Wonder 4 out of 4 stars.
I highly recommend this to children of age 8-12 years. Though it is a children’s book, I suggest that everyone should read this. I am sure you will not regret it.
