After attending a funeral, Hattie Vavaseur's driver picks her up, but she is unsure where they are going. She blames it on her poor memory due to old age. The destination is as much a mystery to her as was the journey. Upon reaching a creepy old mansion, still confused, she asks him if he has made a mistake, but he tells her she indeed is at the right place as per the instructions he had received. More confused, she does not recall why she is there and assumes that she is visiting the mansion for some time and it might belong to some acquaintance of hers. Thus, we enter the world of Hattie Vavaseur or rather a new world of Hattie Vavaseur. In this world, she lives in a mansion with the master of the house whom she does not know or recall knowing. While staying there, she figures out that she is there to purchase the mansion from its master, but strangely she does not remember anything about this deal.

The next day of visiting the place, Hattie's driver takes her to meet a lady named Vamelda, who turns out a psychic. During that appointment, Hattie discovers that she is dead, and this is the afterlife world that she has entered. Once comfortable with the idea of death, Hattie teams with Vamelda to discover her past. This, in turn, unfolds mystery after mystery for Hattie as well as the master of the house.

Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith is not only a book full of mystery, but it has elements of romance and comedy bundled with a vivid imagination of the author. The character development in this book is worth mentioning. Take, for example, Hattie; portrayed as an unlikeable, grumpy old woman in the beginning, but by the middle of the book you start understanding why she is the way she is, and by the end of the book you fall in love with her strength. The same goes for so many characters in this book. Also, I loved the author's writing style which always kept me asking for more. I had to force myself to close the book, at times, which is a good sign of a well-written book. The book is edited properly, and in fact, has a good count of new words which forced me to search their meaning, implying professionalism.

Because of the above-mentioned reasons, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book has mystery, romance, and paranormal touches; the writing is perfect; the language is not difficult to understand, and the storyline is engaging. All this adds up to the like factor of this book.

Anyone who loves to read mysteries is a perfect audience for this book. I would not suggest this book for someone who argues too much scientific evidence and logic for things, as this book is solely an imagination work, which talks about after-life, magic, and psychics.
