Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
Writing a story is never easy. It requires a lot of thinking, planning, and whatnot. Even after all this, the story might not work out the way it was supposed to. I remember the first time I wanted to write a story. I had this brilliant plot in my mind, and I was sure it would turn out great. It did not. I was confused; where did I go wrong? Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide by William H. Coles will help you with situations like this. The A-Z of literary fiction writing is in this book. And believe me when I say this book was my fairy godmother in disguise who came to end my troubles with writing a story.
The book is divided into two parts; The Literary Story in Fiction and Creating a Literary Fictional Story. The first part explains what we should know and take into account while writing. Topics such as character analysis, narration, dialogues, the structure of the plot, etc, are introduced. The importance of characters in a story was emphasized from the very first chapter itself. Different types of narration is explained in detail. Meanings of several terms used in writing. The author elucidates what makes literary fiction different from other genres such as memoirs and nonfiction etc. The second part explains how to achieve all that. Character profile, type of narration, feelings and emotions, plot structure, and such were all explained in a point-wise manner. Anything you want to know about writing literary fiction, you can find it here in depths you never knew about.
My favorite part of the book is chapter 12: why literary stories fail. Giving advice and telling us how to improve is one thing. But pointing out the reasons why we fail is quite something. This chapter alone helped me correct a majority of the mistakes I make while writing. I deeply appreciate the author for adding this segment in the book. He also included what the readers think and expect while reading a book. I felt that this was the most important aspect, as the success of a story is determined by how much the reader enjoyed reading it. It would be quite interesting to think of a story from a reader's perspective.
Another thing I have to point out is the effort taken by the author to include every single thing about writing. I learned a lot, and to say I was amazed would be an understatement. There is so much one can absorb from it. Honestly, I never knew there were these many factors to know about writing. Examples were provided frequently, which made the content easier to understand. All the topics are neatly categorized in order. There is nothing I dislike about the book.
I would like to rate Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide by William H. Coles 4 out of 4 stars. It is professionally edited, as I could find only a single error. Budding writers and those who want to start writing should definitely read this book. You’ll be benefited in one way or the other for sure. I would like to conclude by quoting one of the lines that stuck to me from this book. “If the author is successful, the story is unforgettable”
