Stephan Besik throws us into a world of space exploration and new technology. In Lightship, we have 4 different short stories. We first read The Old Man Notes, followed by Damage Report. The next two stories are Long Shot and Lightship. In the first short story, we follow the story of an old man who has lived for over 200 years, into his journey to space. The world has found a way to stop people from aging until they find another planet suitable for life. In the second short story, we follow a crew landing on Planet 3 to see if it is habitable. The ruins on the planet are still fresh and standing. The result of a nuclear war years ago. The crew must determine if there are deadly diseases on the planet and whether or not the people can survive there.

In the third short story, we follow a team who has been sent on a mission to kill the man in charge of dropping bombs on United States soil. They must defeat him using drones and return home safely without being seen or tracked. In the final short story, we follow a young man named Kevin and his team as he works to design a ship that will be able to go to the moon and other planets. The scientists hope to establish life on the moon eventually and later on planets like Mars and Venus. They develop AI to fly the ship to the moon.

A few things I liked about the book was how the author doesn’t try to cram everything into one year and a short amount of time. I like that he includes historical facts about things such as the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima and facts about the Space Force. I liked that in a couple of the short stories the author jumped straight into action instead of building up to the action with unnecessary details.

A few things I didn’t like about the book were the unnecessary details used to describe things such as how the planet was destroyed and the science behind certain things. Another thing I didn’t like was in the final short story we didn’t have enough detail about what Kevin’s project actually was. We didn’t end up finding out until later on in the story.

Because of all the unnecessary details, we didn’t need to know, and how slowly it started out I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. Because of the action and interesting aspects to the story and no visible error I didn’t subtract another star.

I would recommend this book to an older audience due to a couple of instances of profanity and one part with sexual content. There is some talk of God, religion, and an afterlife. I would not recommend this book to a younger audience because I don’t think it would capture their attention.
