Review of ...on your way home...Do This
Are you a believer but does not seem to understand what call God has placed on your life or, your ministry brings you a lot of challenges, which sometimes seem to be so much more than the joys of serving? Then …on your way home…Do This… is a must read.
The book is about the life of George Six as a minister in the Episcopal Church. I know you might not be familiar with the term Episcopal but it does not matter because after reading the book you would have learned at least one new thing. George was part of a family of achievers. His older brothers had respectable jobs and he "had" to follow in their steps. It was an unexpressed expectation. He chose the life insurance path despite what many of his ministers had said to him about how "he could have a future as a minister". The job had its own cons, his future and success depended on other people. Even here, however, he was told he could have a great future. A near fatal accident caused an awakening upon his life. It was not so much the accident but the events surrounding it. He decided to leave secular work and go into ministry, believed that it was where God wanted him. His also was not a smooth journey, it had bumps but there were joys too. With every assignment and challenge he grew and advanced in his ministry. He had seen far too much regret in the deathbeds of his brothers due to a life not lived well and was afraid of the same plight falling upon him.
Believers often resist the call of God, probably because they think they know what is best for themselves or they can twist God's arm in blessing what is not His will. This leads to God using harsh measures to get their attention, like He did with George. When he sought God in his lowest moment he found Him. He realized that lives are meant to be shared with others. No one is their own person and everybody has a place in the world. A purpose to be fulfilled. We learn from this book that destiny is not a place that we have to end up but the journey. It is in the daily decisions made, how everyday life is lived not just going through the motions. It is living for something that is more than the pursuit of worldly pleasures and satisfying personal needs; availing oneself when and where there is need. The will of God for an individual takes different forms in different seasons of life, but every season prepares us for the next season if we give ourselves. One gets to deal with issues they never thought they could.
This book has all of that and so much more; politics in the church, legalism, money and decision making, gender issues in the church, secularization of the church. The church should learn to deal with these issues in a godly way. It should take part in bringing healing and hope to the community through both evangelism and social outreach, being hands-on in the issues that plague our communities. Even though sometimes it gets hard and we want to hang up and drop the call, the life of George reminds us that we will never excel at something that is contrary to the will of God. Remain in the battle until the very end but also understand when it is time to move on to the next assignment. There is so much to learn from the book and a message for a lot of believers not just the Episcopalians. It is a relaxed read and has just the right amount of humor.
There is, however a significant number of errors which can be very annoying for some readers. There are missing words, punctuation and spelling errors. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it has an excellent message especially for the time we live in with the pandemic bringing so much pain and confusion. Given a chance …on your way home…Do This… has the ability to change not just an individual’s perspective but that of the entire church.
