The book The Queen of Xana by Fred Pilcher is a sci/fi fantasy. The book is based on the legend of the Queen of Xana, Queen Agatha, who was known to be a just ruler and brought prosperity to her land. it is narrated in the third person point of view. It mainly follows Agatha’s perspective, but a few other perspectives are seen.

After the birth of Agatha, a fairy godmother appears to Queen Julia, Agatha’s mother, and blesses Agatha with the gift of wisdom. She warns Julia that there will come a time when Agatha needs to use her wisdom to save her people. As Agatha grows up, she begins to go out of the palace. There she learns of the money lenders who charge exorbitant rates of interest. She tries to bring up these matters in the council but to no avail. On the day she is to be named heir to the throne, a sorcerer named Magi comes and disrupts the entire land of Xana. Her fairy Godmother appears to her and tells her that she must find Prince Olaf, the crown prince of Wan, and make love to him. If she identifies him correctly then Magi will be destroyed, but if she does not, then the land of Xana and Wan will be lost forever.

The aspect that I liked about the book was that it was based on the legend of Queen Agatha. I learned a lot about her and how she ruled her kingdom. Another aspect that I liked was that Xana is shown to be a land where there was no sexual discrimination. I also liked that the author explained what the legend says and how different people he spoke to interpreted it. He, at various instances, explains about the problems that Agatha faced and did not paint a rosy picture. I really liked the fact that he put in efforts to explain the difference between the people’s story and his.

There were no aspects that I did not like about this book.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book taught me about a legend that I did not know existed. Also, the book explained in detail how Agatha was involved in the lives of her people, and how it affected their lives. It also shows the inner workings of the council that helped her make decisions. The book was exceptionally edited as I found no errors.

I would recommend this book to people who like to read about legends. This book is based on the legend, and it explains about her character and personality. There are instances of profanity. There is sexual content.
